Social media users pointed out that concert-goers had no idea who Smashing Pumpkins icon Bill Corgan was.
’90s rock legend Billy Corgan, the lead singer of Smashing Pumpkins, received a lackluster response to his surprise Coachella performance with Sombr.
On Saturday, April 11, Sombr made his Coachella debut on the same day that Corgan made his, as the two men sang the Smashing Pumpkins song “1979.”
The Coachella Crowd Was Underwhelmed by Billy Corgan
Before the joint performance, Sombr introduced Corgan by asking the crowd, “Coachella, is it cool if I bring some f—ing rock royalty on the stage right now?”
Sombr added, “Coachella, I want you to make the most noise for this person. It’s their first time ever appearing at Coachella,” as seen in a TikTok video shared by user @the.socal.local. “Please make some f—ing noise for Bill Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins!”
Although there were some enthusiastic cheers, the crowd as a whole was surprisingly chill about Corgan joining Sombr on the stage.
In the comments of the TikTok video, fans sounded off on the Coachella crowd’s underwhelmed reaction to the Smashing Pumpkins star. One pointed out, “They’re too young to know who he was.”
Another TikTok user shared, “They’re all saying…. Who, from who?”
Someone else echoed, “Crowd is like ‘who’ lol. So disappointing.”
A different fan marveled, “That’s hard to believe that the Smashing Pumpkins have never played Coachella.
Another TikTok user pointed out, “Sound guy had one job,” as a second wrote, “Mic didn’t work?? Damn,” referring to sound difficulties when Sombr and Corgan first started singing together.
Meanwhile, yet another fan commented, “Now that’s real music.”
What Was Sombr’s Coachella Set List?
Sombr’s set list for his 2026 Coachella performance was as follows:
“Homewrecker”
“We Never Dated”
“Come Closer”
“I Wish I Knew How to Quit You”
“Undressed”
“1979” (with Billy Corgan)
“Potential”
"Crushing”
“Back to Friends”
The second weekend of Coachella takes place from April 17-19.
The Smashing Pumpkins are set to headline Lollapalooza in Chicago this August, for the first time in over 30 years, with Sombr also on the festival lineup.

DJ Taz's Take: Ok, hmmm, the audience in general was quiet. The track is good. Billy still has the voice; he is simply older.
