Jay Weinberg took to Instagram Sunday evening to share news of his departure from his most recent musical endeavor, his role as drummer for the iconic ’80s band, Suicidal Tendencies.
Weinberg, former Slipknot drummer, was offered the gig in March 2024, and after nearly two years of drumming for the band, he is stepping away to pursue projects closer to home. Weinberg and his wife, Chloe Weinberg, are expecting a child this year, which Jay says was a motivating factor in the decision.
“With Chlor Weinberg’s & my first child on the way, I’ve been dedicating time to passion projects like @portraitsofanapparition [a new band], a growing series of collaborations, finally building a proper at-home creative space, and some new in-the-works projects that I can’t quite announce just yet.
He extended his thanks to his bandmates, as well as the legacy of drummers who played for the band before him.
“I quite literally can’t conceive of my life as a drummer without the profound influence of Suicidal Tendencies. So many of my drumming heroes have added to the historic legacy of this band, and it’s the honor of a lifetime to contribute to it myself in some way.”
Suicidal Tendencies has been influencing the metal and thrash genres since its debut self-titled album in 1983. Inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame in 2016, the band has been recognized for its influence on punk culture and pioneering crossover thrash, a genre blending punk and metal.
Throughout the span of the band’s activity, it has undergone many lineup changes, with it’s most recent lineup consisting of original vocalist Mike Muir, guitarists Dean Pleasants and Ben Weinman, bassist Tye Trujillo and drummer Jay Weinberg. Under Weinberg’s post, crew members extended their gratitude and wish him the best on his new projects.
