MaRynn’s “She Broke Up With The Boy” tells an entirely different tale.
Just dropped her debut album, MaRynn, officially putting herself on a first-name basis with fans. Throughout the project, she shared tidbits of personal moments and elements that make up her life story, including her love for ‘90s country. One of the standout moments comes with her creative twist on a Trisha Yearwood classic, as the songstress turns the hit “She’s In Love With The Boy” into her own rendition with “She Broke Up With The Boy.”
Catching up with Country Now while counting down the final hours before her first full-length project dropped, MaRynn eagerly opened up about this track, and how she managed to intertwine her true experience with the hit story penned solely by Jon Ims in the early ‘90s.
Catering To True ’90s Country Fans
Any traditional country music lovers will be able to recognize the familiar melody on MaRynn’s new release almost instantly as it’s the same used in Yearwood’s tune, however the storyline penned by MaRynn and her co-writers Olivia DaPonte and Josh Kerr, is the complete opposite of the beloved classic.
“If you’re a fan of ‘90s country, you’re going to get it right away. And if you’re not, I’m willing to educate the people who don’t know because I truly believe ‘90s country is just awesome. And I love that I get to be the one to kind of remind people, ‘Hey, these songs are really great and this is just my modern take on it,’” she shared.
MaRynn’s love for this era of music and Trisha Yearwood, particularly, stems from her childhood. It’s the sound she grew up on and it continues to be a driving force of inspiration in her career to this day. While she wanted to honor Yearwood’s original version, MaRynn couldn’t fully relate to the narrative, so she reimagined it with lyrics that reflect her own life.
“She’s just such an amazing artist and I’ve met her before. She’s so kind and I love the song ‘She’s In Love With The Boy,’ but I just can’t relate to that,” MaRynn admitted honestly. “But I can relate to breaking up with a boy.”
Pulling From A Real-Life Breakup
While writing this track, MaRynn tapped into her personal life to make it as authentic as possible. She ended up drawing from the time she broke up with a guy and instantly felt a stroke of freedom after ending things with this person who wasn’t right for her in the end. The sadness that’s normally felt in those moments was replaced by a desire to celebrate the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.
So what started as an idea to write a “banger” for her first album quickly evolved into the ultimate anthem for a girl’s girl.
“I was just like, guys, I have this crazy idea of doing just a little twist on this Trisha song, and they ended up really digging it, and I’m so thankful for that because it turned out so good. I’m obsessed with it,” she declared.
The new release was accompanied by a sassy and fun music video set at an old-fashioned ice cream shop, The Dairy Lodge, located in Traverse City, MI, just a few hours away from MaRynn’s hometown in Grand Rapids, MI. As soon as she steps out of the local bar and heads to the ice cream store, the singer’s bubbly personality comes out in full force, highlighting the empowering nature of the song’s story.
The Song’s Original Characters Get A New Outcome
The song leads with the same female character, Katie, except this time she’s not falling head over heels for the boy. MaRynn’s narrative follows Katie as if it didn’t work out between her and Tommy. Instead of wearing rose-colored glasses, the main character is now standing up for herself when her man doesn’t treat her right and as a result, finds peace in moving on to do bigger and better things.
“She don’t wanna hear a single sad slow song/ Said she kept it going like two months too long/ She got tired of waiting around/ Got sick of sending him rings/ Now everybody’s buying her drinks,” MaRynn sings while illustrating the freshly single woman’s night out on the town.
Upon reaching the chorus, the Michigan native’s voice explodes with confidence, leaving fans with a vibrant and punchy opportunity to celebrate their own breakups without sad songs or tear-filled nights. Her signature sass comes out in full force while exuding the kind of carefree joy that makes you want to roll the windows down, crank the volume, and sing along at the top of your lungs.
“She broke up with the boy/She broke up with the boy/ She said goodbye and she didn’t give him a choice/ She said she needed a man/ Then broke up with the boy,” she continues on the upbeat chorus.
To MaRynn’s knowledge, Trisha Yearwood has yet to hear her version of the song, but she hopes that if it ever does fall into her hands, the icon will approve.
“I am hoping somebody sends it to her or she hears it somewhere and she likes it. I hope.”
Getting On A First Name Basis With Fans
“She Broke Up With The Boy” is one of 12 tracks on her debut album, all of which she co-wrote except for the final track, “longer than me,” a solo write from Anna Vaus. The collection is filled with personal songs that capture who MaRynn Taylor is, thus making her first name the perfect title to lead this chapter with.
My artist name is MaRynn Taylor, but this music is just me. So I wanted to name it that, especially for my debut, just the self-titled just made sense for this music.”
In addition to “She Broke Up With The Boy,” the album also includes “same girl same,” “season 2 of friends,” both an ode to the hit TV series, as well as recent releases “pretty much” and “dirty blonde.”
“All of these songs are very just my life, what I’ve gone through, and I just hope people find their story and mine,” MaRynn shared honestly.
She is currently on the road as direct support for Jake Scott’s Live In ’25 tour. This trek will come to a close this weekend, giving MaRynn Taylor the chance to not only celebrate the end of this tour run, but also the release of her debut album. She will get to celebrate among the Music City community with a show at Nashville’s Brooklyn Bowl on Friday, August 22.
